How to Clean, Stuff and Store a Handbag So It Keeps Its Shape

A bag rarely dies from being carried. It dies from being shoved into a closet on top of three other bags, strap tangled, body creased, sitting in a warm corner for a season. These are the rules that keep a bag looking like the day it arrived, split by material because the wrong advice for one is the right advice for another.

Cleaning, by material

  • Full-grain and top-grain leather. Wipe with a barely damp cloth, then dry immediately. Condition two or three times a year, not weekly; over-conditioning softens the structure you bought the bag for. Test any product on the inside seam first.
  • PU and faux leather. Mild soap and water, never alcohol or acetone, which lifts the coating. Do not soak the seams, and never put it in a dryer or leave it in a hot car: heat is what makes faux leather crack.
  • Coated canvas. The easiest material to live with. A soft brush to lift dust from the weave, then a damp cloth. Dry the print side flat so it does not stiffen in a curve.
  • Nylon. Hand wash cool, rinse well, and hang in the shade. Direct sun fades it faster than use does.
  • Suede and nubuck. A dry brush only, and a professional for anything a brush will not lift. Water spots on suede are permanent if you improvise.

For hardware, a dry microfibre cloth is enough. Skip polishes: they get into the stitching and attract grime.

Stuffing is not optional

Fill the body until it holds its shape without being tight. Acid-free tissue is ideal; a clean cotton pillowcase or a rolled towel works. Do not use newspaper, the ink transfers, and do not use the bag’s own contents as stuffing, since a phone pressing on one panel for months leaves a permanent impression.

Structured shapes forgive the least and reward the most, which is why a Structured Tote Bag with Detachable Pouch stored properly still looks sharp in year three.

Store it like a bag, not like a shirt

  • Rest it upright on a shelf in its dust bag. Soft bags can be laid flat.
  • Do not hang a leather bag by its straps for long periods; the handles stretch and the shoulders distort. Hanging is fine for a nylon backpack such as the Vintage Drawstring Backpack Bag.
  • Keep straps inside the bag or draped over the top so they do not crease against a neighbour.
  • Away from heat and sun, and with air space around it. Plastic covers trap moisture, which is how a bag comes out of storage with spots.

Before a trip

Stuff the bag, slide it into its dust bag, and pack it in the middle of your suitcase between soft clothes. Put anything sharp or oily in a separate pouch, and remember that a chain strap will scratch a leather lining if it travels loose. A small box bag with a chain, like the Black Mini Box Bag with Chain Strap, is best wrapped so the chain cannot swing against the hardware.

When to stop and ask for help

Ink, dye transfer from denim, a torn corner, a broken clasp or mould: those are professional jobs. Everything else in this list is a cloth, some tissue and ten minutes.
