A full metal chain makes the strongest statement and works best on small bags, where the weight stays low. A chain threaded through a leather strap is the most comfortable option for daily wear because the leather sits on your shoulder. A woven or doubled chain adds texture and shortens the drop automatically.

Three Ways to Shorten a Chain Strap

Long chains look sloppy and swing while you walk. These three fixes take under a minute and need no tools.

• Double it: fold the chain in half and clip both ends to the same side ring for a short shoulder drop
• Knot it: tie a single loose knot near the clasp to take off 10 to 15 cm
• Tuck it: run the excess chain inside the bag and let the flap hold it

Choosing a Hardware Finish

Silver and gunmetal read modern and pair with cool tones, black, grey and white. Gold and brass warm up tan, cream, brown and olive. If most of your jewelry is one metal, match the bag to it and the whole look comes together.

Mixed hardware works when it is deliberate, for example a gold chain on a black bag with silver zipper teeth.
