An underarm bag is any short-strapped bag that tucks high under the arm, sitting at or above the waistline. The shape came back because it changes proportions: worn high, it makes legs look longer and keeps the silhouette clean under a coat.
It is also the least practical shape in the family, which is part of its appeal. You buy it for the line, not the capacity.
Baguette, Crescent and Boxy: Three Versions
A baguette is a long, narrow, rectangular bag, usually with a short shoulder strap. It reads retro and works with straight-leg denim and tailored trousers.
A crescent or half moon curves against the body, so it stays put when you walk and hugs the ribs under a jacket. A boxy underarm bag has structure and a flat base, and it is the easiest of the three to open one-handed.
The Drop Matters More Than the Size
Measure the strap drop, which is the distance from the top of the strap to the top of the bag. For an underarm fit you want roughly 12 to 18 cm. Below 12 cm and the bag will not clear a winter coat. Above 20 cm and it hangs at your hip, which loses the whole point of the shape.
If you plan to wear it over thick layers, choose an adjustable strap or a bag that also has a longer detachable strap.
Proportion Tips
Petite frames suit smaller, curved shapes that follow the body line. Taller frames can carry a longer baguette without the bag looking lost. If you wear oversized outerwear, a structured boxy shape keeps the outfit from swallowing the bag.
Outfit Pairings That Work
The shape is short and horizontal, so it wants vertical lines underneath it. Straight or wide-leg trousers, a column dress, or a long coat all work. Avoid wearing it with a cropped, boxy top at the same height, because two horizontal lines at the same level cut the body in half.
- Long coat plus a crescent bag in a matching neutral
- Straight-leg jeans, white tee, baguette bag at the waist
- Slip dress and a small boxy underarm bag for evening
- Tailored blazer with a chain-strap shoulder bag tucked high
What It Will Not Carry
Be honest about capacity. Most underarm bags fit a phone, a card holder, keys, a lipstick and little else. A water bottle, a paperback or a full wallet will distort the shape and strain the stitching at the strap anchors.
Storing It So It Keeps Its Line
Store the bag upright, stuffed with tissue or a soft cloth, with the strap laid inside or draped over the top rather than folded. Keep curved shapes supported at the base, otherwise the curve flattens over a few months.
